Homemade Churros

Ingredients:

For the Churros:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil works well)

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

For the Chocolate Dipping Sauce (optional):

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Churro Dough:
    1. In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
    2. Once boiling, remove from heat and stir in the flour until the mixture forms a dough. Return to the heat and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly until the dough pulls away from the sides of the pan.
    3. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes.
    4. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. The dough should be smooth and slightly thick.
    5. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  2. Heat the Oil:
    1. Pour oil into a large, heavy-bottomed pan or deep fryer to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). You can use a thermometer to check the temperature.
  3. Pipe the Churros:
    1. Fit a large piping bag with a star-shaped tip and fill it with the churro dough.
    2. Pipe strips of dough (about 4-6 inches long) directly into the hot oil. Use scissors or a knife to cut the dough from the piping bag.
  4. Fry the Churros:
    1. Fry the churros in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
    2. Remove the churros from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  5. Coat the Churros:
    1. In a shallow bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon.
    2. Roll the warm churros in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well coated.
  6. Prepare the Chocolate Dipping Sauce (optional):
    1. In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.
    2. Remove from heat and add the chopped chocolate. Stir until smooth and melted.
    3. If desired, stir in sugar and vanilla extract for added sweetness and flavor.
  7.
  8. Serve:
  9. Serve the churros warm with the chocolate dipping sauce, if desired.
  10.
