Patty Melt Sandwiches
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cups coarsely chopped onions (from one large onion)
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided
- 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
- 2 teaspoons ketchup
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 8 slices rye bread
- 8 ounces Swiss cheese, sliced
- Garlic powder (optional)
- Additional salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Caramelize the Onions:
- Heat the Olive Oil:
- In a large pan set on medium-low heat, heat the olive oil.
- Caramelize the Onions:
- Add the coarsely chopped onions to the pan. Cook, stirring often, until they are very golden and caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
- Season with a little salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
Prepare the Patties:
- Heat the Skillet:
- While the onions are cooking, heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat and melt 2 tablespoons of butter.
- Mix the Ground Beef:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, 1 teaspoon salt, and a dash of pepper. Mix until just combined.
- Form the Patties:
- Divide the meat mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty slightly smaller than the slices of bread.
Cook the Patties:
- Brown the Patties:
- Cook the patties in the hot skillet for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until well browned.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
Assemble the Sandwiches:
- Prepare the Bread:
- Wipe the skillet clean if necessary and melt 2 more tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan.
- Assemble:
- Arrange 4 slices of rye bread in the pan, butter sides down.
- Top each slice with a burger patty, a slice of Swiss cheese, half of the caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and finally another slice of rye bread, butter side up.
Cook the Sandwiches:
- Grill the Sandwiches:
- Cook each sandwich for 2-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. You may need to add more butter to the skillet as you cook the sandwiches.
Serve:
- Cut and Serve:
- Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and place them on a cutting board.
- Cut each sandwich diagonally and serve immediately.
