Ingredients:

  • For the Hamburger Steaks:
    • 1 lb ground beef
    • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
    • 1/4 cup milk
    • 1 egg
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Onion Gravy:
    • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
    • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
    • 2 tbsp flour
    • 2 cups beef broth
    • 1 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tsp dried thyme
    • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
    • In a large bowl, mix together ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until well combined.
    • Shape the mixture into 4 patties.
    • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  2. Make the Onion Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add vegetable oil and heat over medium heat.
    • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes.
    • Stir in the flour and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
    • Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add soy sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy has thickened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Combine and Serve:
    • Return the cooked hamburger steaks to the skillet with the gravy. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to heat through and allow the flavors to meld.
    • Serve the hamburger steaks with onion gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite side.
