Fried Potatoes and Onions
Ingredients:
- 4 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil or butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Optional: garlic powder, paprika, or herbs for extra flavor
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
- Prep the Potatoes and Onions:
- Start by peeling the potatoes and slicing them thinly, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Slice the onion into thin rings or half-rings, depending on your preference.
- Heat the Oil:
- In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil or butter over medium heat. Make sure the pan is hot enough to sizzle when you add the potatoes.
- Fry the Potatoes:
- Add the sliced potatoes to the skillet in an even layer. Let them cook without stirring for about 4-5 minutes to develop a golden crust on one side.
- Once the potatoes begin to brown, gently flip them over to cook the other side. Cook for another 4-5 minutes until they’re crispy and golden brown on both sides.
- Add the Onions:
- After the potatoes have started to brown, add the sliced onions to the skillet. Stir the onions into the potatoes and cook everything together for about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.
- The onions should soften and caramelize, while the potatoes become crispy and tender.
- Season and Serve:
- Season the potatoes and onions with salt and pepper to taste. For added flavor, you can sprinkle in garlic powder, paprika, or your favorite herbs.
- Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
- Serve:
- Serve hot as a side dish or enjoy them as a comforting main course. These fried potatoes and onions pair well with eggs, bacon, or grilled meats.
Tips:
- For extra crispiness, soak the potato slices in cold water for 30 minutes before frying. Drain and pat dry with paper towels before adding them to the skillet.
- You can use a mix of butter and oil for richer flavor and to prevent burning.
