Pistachio Puppy Chow

Puppy Chow has been one of my all-time favorite treats since childhood. I was first introduced to it at a school bake sale and have been hooked ever since. I had the classic recipe memorized by high school because I made it so often (not sure if that should be a point of pride or shame), but it wasn’t until recently that I started venturing into the world of different Puppy Chow flavors.

As a huge fan of all things pistachio, I knew this version was a must try. Can it hold its own against the classic chocolate and peanut butter? You’ll have to give the recipe a try and decide for yourself!

Like the original, this version still starts with Rice Chex. You can mix everything in a large bowl, or my preferred method is to toss it together in a clean brown paper bag. With the bag method you can fold the top over and shake it all together without turning your kitchen into a cloud of powdered sugar. You also can also toss or compost the bag when you’re done which makes cleanup a breeze.

The pistachio flavor not only adds a fun twist, but gives the treat a gorgeous green hue. It would be a perfect treat for the holidays, a baby shower, or St, Patrick’s day. Set it out in a big serving bowl or bag it up for individual servings. No matter what the occasion, this Pistachio Puppy Chow is sure to be a big hit!

Ingredients
1 (12 oz) box Rice Chex
1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
½ cup butter, melted
1 cup white chocolate or cream cheese chips
1 (3.4 oz) instant pistachio pudding mix
½ teaspoon vanilla
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups powdered sugar

Preparation
Pour cereal into a very large bowl or doubled clean brown paper bag, set aside.
In a large microwave-safe bowl, add sweetened condensed milk, butter, and chips. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between, until chips are fully melted. Mix until smooth.
Mix in the pudding powder until evenly combined, then add vanilla and salt.
Pour pudding mixture over the cereal and toss until evenly coated, then add powdered sugar and toss again.
Allow treat to cool then store in an airtight container. Best when eaten in the first day!

Formation and Tips

Formation: The key to achieving the perfect Pistachio Puppy Chow is evenly coating the cereal with the melted pistachio mixture. Tossing in a paper bag makes it easier to achieve even coverage.

Storage: Store the treat in an airtight container for up to 3 days, though it’s best enjoyed fresh.

Conclusion

Pistachio Puppy Chow is a fun, flavorful twist on a beloved classic. Its unique nutty taste and delightful crunch make it a standout treat for any occasion. Whether you’re sharing it at a bake sale or enjoying it at home, it’s bound to leave a lasting impression.
